An Interview with Adi Oasis
Question: If your music were a work of art in an American museum, what would it be?
Adi Oasis: It would definitely be a sculpture of a warrior woman. That’s the image I had when I changed my stage name from Adeline to Adi Oasis. I envisioned a silver sculpture of a woman on a vrey tall horse, like a Valkyrie.
Question: Is your expression of femininity inherently linked to a warrior-like stance?
Adi Oasis: I’ve constantly faced sexism, both on the street and in the studio. I’ve been dismissed by male musicians simply as I’m a woman, even when I was the producer. It’s a constant battle for a woman to be heard. The music industry can be incredibly harsh, especially for women, and even more so with the rise of streaming.the powerful frequently enough go unpunished. Knowing that someone as talented as Lenny Kravitz exists gives me hope. When I feel like giving up, I remember him, and it motivates me. To achieve such success while remaining so kind and generous is truly remarkable.
“When Prince died, it hit me hard. My dream of playing with him one day was shattered.”
Adi Oasis
Question: On March 29, you opened for Lenny Kravitz at the Paris La Défense Arena, playing in front of 40,000 people. Were you nervous?
Adi Oasis: Honestly, I felt perfectly pleasant in front of 40,000 people! [Laughs] The frustrating part is knowing that it might be hard to repeat that experience.
Question: How did you and Lenny Kravitz first connect?
Adi Oasis: It was thru Instagram. He sent me a private message saying he loved my music. You’re the first person I’ve told this to! He was forming a new band for his tour and asked me to join as a bassist, but I politely declined. I really wanted to focus on my own music and career. He understood my decision. As then, we’ve become friends and have had opportunities to play together. I generally avoid talking about him too much because I don’t want people to think I’m name-dropping.
Question: You moved from Paris to New York. Has that changed your approach to songwriting?
Adi Oasis: That was the goal of moving. I live in Brooklyn,in Clinton Hill. The architecture there is stunning. I’ve always been fascinated by architecture, even though I’m not an expert. It resonates with me – the beauty of well-designed structures. The sprawling houses of Los Angeles don’t appeal to me at all. Before, I wrote simple songs on guitar, with just a few basic chords. It was in New York that I really grew as a bassist and composer. An artist is always evolving. Not everyone is born with innate talent like Prince, who could play countless instruments. My name is Adeline Michèle Pétricien, and I grew up in a city. My journey might have been longer than others. “Coffee au lait” (2018) was one of the first songs I wholly self-produced. When Prince died, it was a huge blow. My ultimate dream of playing with him was gone. As long as we’re alive, dreams are possible… but that was over.I think what attracted me most to Prince was that he didn’t care what anyone else thought.
“My album has around 100 million streams. In the late ’90s, I might have been a millionaire. Sadly, that’s not reflected in my bank account.”

Question: Has the complexity of a song become a key factor?
Adi Oasis: No, because even a complex song should sound simple. Some musicians can play jazz with incredible speed, but being a good musician means knowing how to do a lot with very little. As Miles Davis saeid, “Space is part of the music.” When I was younger, I sang in many different styles. Now, I’m happy when I can create very simple phrases. As a musician, you spend years honing your technique so that your performances can bring you to a state of ecstasy. You have to reach that point to make all the questions disappear.
Question: In a world dominated by streaming and algorithms, does an artist need to become a performer?
Adi oasis: Sometimes the simplest songs do better than the ones that really move you because thay blend into the background in bars and hotels. what’s happening is serious. My album has around 100 million streams. In the late ’90s, I might have been a millionaire. Unfortunately, that’s not reflected in my bank account.Spotify pays around $0.003 per stream, and the CEO of that company is now one of the richest people in the world. We’re all complicit, and there isn’t really another solution. [One of her songs plays in the background.] Oh! Listen! It’s my song!
Question: In the middle of an interview, I must admit that it is quite chic!
Adi Oasis: I slipped them a little note to impress you…
Question: If you could invite several personalities from outside the music world into the studio for advice, who would you choose?
Adi Oasis: Tennis champion Serena Williams, because she knows how to win. I’m a huge fan of hers. Her focus must be incredible. maybe director Wes Anderson, too, for his unique perspective. I’d need someone who can bring humor. In that sense, comedian Dave Chappelle might be an excellent idea, but he’s been criticized recently for making jokes about transgender people… It’s a very sensitive issue in the United States right now. And then, who better than RuPaul to coach me?
