Adil Aouchiche was once considered one of Europe’s greatest talents. That’s why Schalke could have landed a real royal transfer.
FC Schalke 04 has added to a busy winter transfer window with the signing of Adil Aouchiche, though the move occurred relatively quietly following the arrival of Edin Džeko. The 23-year-old French midfielder with Algerian roots bolsters the central midfield and brings a compelling history to the 2. Bundesliga side.
Aouchiche signed a contract with Schalke on Deadline Day, extending through at least 2027. Schalke’s Director of Professional Football, Youri Mulder, described him as an “intense box-to-box player” possessing “high game intelligence, dynamism and the courage to make risky passes.” Aouchiche himself stated he “really wanted to move to Schalke and did everything he could to become part of this club.”
With over 200 professional appearances to his name, Aouchiche considers himself an experienced player despite his age, highlighting his technical skill and willingness to contribute energetically in midfield.
From European Championship Standout to Aberdeen
Aouchiche’s professional journey began at the Paris Saint-Germain academy, where he trained alongside stars like Neymar and Mbappé, even making his debut under Thomas Tuchel at the age of 17.
He first gained significant recognition at the 2019 U17 European Championship, where he scored an impressive nine goals in just five games, finishing as the tournament’s top scorer. He was subsequently named the best player of the tournament, quickly establishing himself as a highly sought-after talent.
Players who competed alongside Aouchiche at that tournament included Karim Adeyemi, Nick Woltemade, Angelo Stiller, Anthony Elanga, Eric García, Bukayo Saka and William Saliba.
This success translated to club level, with Aouchiche playing 34 of 36 possible Ligue 1 games for AS Saint-Étienne in the 2020/21 season at just 18 years old. He scored seven league goals, becoming a key player for the club and briefly reaching a market value of ten million euros, earning a nomination for the Golden Boy Award in 2020.
His career trajectory stalled in subsequent moves to Lorient, Sunderland, Portsmouth and Aberdeen. Across these clubs, he managed 19 goals in 111 appearances. Sunderland recalled him from his loan spell at Aberdeen to facilitate the transfer to Schalke.
Schalke saw an opportunity to revitalize a player who, at his peak, demonstrated qualities reminiscent of PSG’s Vitinha: technical proficiency, tireless running, resilience under pressure, and strong box-to-box capabilities.
The transfer to Schalke, currently leading the 2. Bundesliga, provides Aouchiche with a platform to reignite his career and contribute to a team with promotion ambitions. The club is managed by Miron Muslic, formerly of Plymouth.
Aouchiche’s arrival comes as Schalke also attempt to finalize a deal for Millwall-bound Anthony Patterson, with Swedish goalkeeper Melker Ellborg set to join the Black Cats. The pursuit of Aouchiche was a late push before the transfer deadline, with reports indicating advanced talks between Schalke and Sunderland.
The move represents a fresh start for Aouchiche, who will be hoping to recapture the form that once marked him as one of Europe’s most promising young talents. If Schalke can unlock that potential, Aouchiche could prove to be a pivotal addition as they strive to return to the Bundesliga’s top flight. The club hopes he can become a “Ruhrpott Vitinha” in royal blue.
