AdoptAxolotl: Save the Endangered Axolotl of Xochimilco
Axolotl: An Endangered Species in Xochimilco
The axolotl is an endemic species from Xochimilco, Mexico, and is currently endangered. To support its conservation, the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) launched the AdoptAxolotl campaign three years ago. This initiative encourages people to virtually adopt an axolotl, promoting environmental and cultural restoration of this species and its habitat.
Luis Zambrano González, an ecological restoration researcher at UNAM, explains that saving the axolotl involves restoring Xochimilco, a site vital for food and culture for over 1,500 years. He emphasizes that this area is more than a festive space; it holds significant environmental importance for Mexico City and the country.
In this third campaign edition, the goal is to raise six million pesos to support research and maintenance activities for the axolotl and its environment. Zambrano notes that rescuing Xochimilco requires collaboration between the government, academia, and civil society, with a total estimated need of 600 million pesos for restoration.
Vania Mendoza Solís, the campaign coordinator for 2024-2025, shares that Xochimilco faces challenges such as urbanization, poor water quality, and the introduction of exotic species like carp and tilapia.
Chinampa-Refugio Model for Axolotl Conservation
To combat these issues, scientists are implementing the Chinampa-Refugio model. This sustainable approach integrates traditional farming methods to create habitats for the axolotl while supporting agriculture. Currently, 36 chinampa-refugios have been rehabilitated and about 5.5 kilometers of canals have been restored, benefiting hundreds of people directly and indirectly.
In previous campaigns, the first received 430 donations, while the second saw 5,000 contributions totaling 3 million pesos. The goal for the current season is to collect at least 30% more.
How to Adopt an Axolotl
