Adrian Newey: Aston Martin’s 2026 F1 Car is “Extreme” Design | Formula 1 News

Aston Martin’s unveiling of its Formula 1 challenger, the AMR26, was overshadowed by technical difficulties during the launch event in Saudi Arabia, but the car itself is already generating significant buzz within the paddock. More importantly, the design represents a bold, and potentially game-changing, direction under the guidance of recently-appointed managing technical partner Adrian Newey.

While the launch itself revealed only the car’s livery – a visual update rather than the full technical package – Newey described the AMR26 as “one of the more extreme interpretations” of the aerodynamic regulations. This assessment comes as the team prepares for a crucial pre-season test at the Bahrain International Circuit, beginning .

Newey, renowned for his innovative designs throughout a storied career, joined Aston Martin in . He acknowledged the compressed timeframe for developing the AMR26, particularly given the team’s simultaneous efforts to establish a new factory, wind tunnel, and driver-in-the-loop simulator. “Because of the very compressed design time, we decided on a direction, a single direction, that we would pursue. And that is what we’ve done,” he told BBC Sport.

The season marks a significant shift in Formula 1 regulations, prompting teams to explore diverse approaches to maximize performance. Newey drew parallels to the rule changes, noting that “a bit like , there’s a new set of aerodynamic regulations, there’s been lots of different interpretations. Whether it’s the right one or the wrong one, only time will tell.”

The AMR26’s design has already garnered attention from rival teams. Mercedes driver George Russell, considered a pre-season championship favorite, described the car as “pretty spectacular” and “probably the most standout in terms of the car design… it looks very impressive.” Williams team principal James Vowles echoed this sentiment, calling it a “really, really interesting design.”

However, the path to unveiling the AMR26 wasn’t without its challenges. The car’s initial shakedown test in Spain last month was limited to just four laps with Lance Stroll at the wheel before a breakdown occurred. Fernando Alonso managed a further 60 laps on the final day of testing, but the car was notably presented in an all-black livery, partly because, according to Newey, it was simply ready so late in the process that the team hadn’t had time to apply the final paint scheme.

Newey’s arrival at Aston Martin coincided with a period of organizational restructuring. He emphasized the importance of fostering collaboration among the team’s talented individuals. “What I found was a lot of individually very talented people who weren’t necessarily working that well together. And so that’s what we’ve tried to really concentrate on,” he explained. He also highlighted the team’s focus on establishing a solid foundation for the season, with the expectation of significant development potential throughout the year.

The launch event itself, held at a design museum in Ithra and sponsored by the Saudi Arabian national oil company, experienced technical glitches. The live stream was interrupted shortly after beginning, and the event started nearly 20 minutes late. Despite these issues, the unveiling served as a platform to showcase the team’s ambitions and the first glimpse of Newey’s vision for Aston Martin’s future in Formula 1.

Aston Martin’s partnership with Honda as their engine supplier adds another layer of complexity and opportunity for the season. Newey acknowledged the “incredibly compressed cycle” involved in designing this year’s car while integrating the new power unit. The team is hoping that a strong fundamental design will allow for substantial improvements as the season progresses.

The coming weeks will be critical as Aston Martin puts the AMR26 through its paces in Bahrain. The pre-season test will provide valuable data and insights into the car’s performance and reliability, allowing the team to refine its setup and address any remaining issues before the season-opening race. The early reactions to the car’s design suggest that Aston Martin, under Newey’s leadership, is poised to be a significant contender in the Formula 1 championship.
