Adult Interrailing: Your Next Sustainable European Adventure

Adult Interrailing: Your Next Sustainable European Adventure

January 26, 2025 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor World

Title: Rediscovering Europe: A Greener, Slower Journey

The summer of 2017, nestled between the end of sixth form and the start of university, was supposed to be filled with Márquez-like escapades. Instead, I found myself at the helm of a disastrous week in Ayia Napa, missing out on the quintessential post-A Level rite of passage: the interrail trip. Fast forward to last year, as I pondered my carbon footprint while planning my summer annual leave, the idea resurfaced. After all, there’s no statute of limitations on an interrail pass.

In the past few decades, travel has evolved at an alarming pace. Bargain flights have proliferated, transforming the world into a series of transient airports. It’s convenient, sure, but it’s also destructive. Flight numbers have skyrocketed, leading to a surge in aviation emissions.

But there’s a growing case for a more mindful, sustainable form of travel: train travel. It’s not just a deprived student’s last resort. It’s a greener, slower, more enriching way to experience the world.

How Does Interrailing Work?

Interrailing passes offer an all-in-one ticket for train travel across Europe. Global passes provide access to several countries, starting from €212 (£176), while one-country passes start at €119 (£99). You can choose four to fifteen travel days within a month, with train reservations required.

Planning is key: trains fill up fast, so book in advance. Websites like the Man in Seat 61 can help plot routes. I stuck to France and Spain, but there are 33 countries available.

My Interrail Adventure

My journey began with a Thursday evening Eurostar from London to Paris, arriving at the Art Deco sanctuary that is Hotel Lutetia. A historic hub for artists and intellectuals, it’s a modern-day palace, complete with vine-covered walls and a Eiffel Tower view.

Two sunny days in Paris were followed by a high-speed train to Barcelona. The Nobu hotel, perched next to Barcelona-Sants station, was a revelation. Its sake suite offers panoramic views from La Sagrada Familia to Montjuïc.

Next up was Seville, a six-hour train ride away. The Palacio de Villapanés, an 18th-century palace turned boutique hotel, was a stunning place to unwind. Then, it was off to Cádiz, where I stayed at the Gran Meliá Palacio de Sancti Petri.

From Cádiz, I headed to Madrid, catching the first train at 6.30am and arriving in under five hours. The URSO Hotel & Spa in Chueca, Madrid’s hipster and LGBTQ+ neighborhood, was the perfect base for exploring the city.

The final leg took me to San Sebastián, a five-hour train ride from Madrid. The Nobu Hotel sits on La Concha bay, with a roof terrace and pool overlooking Santa Clara island.

Train Travel: The Greener, Slower Way

Train travel is more than just a way to reduce your carbon footprint (although that’s reason enough). It’s a chance to slow down, to immerse yourself in the landscape and culture as it passes by your window. It’s a way to truly experience Europe, onelong, unhurried journey at a time.

Two glorious weeks later, I returned home, my heart and mind full of new experiences, my carbon footprint significantly lighter. Interrailing isn’t just a rite of passage; it’s a doorway to a slower, greener way of traveling. And it’s not just for students anymore.

Rediscovering Europe’s beauty, Redefined

My interrail journey wasn’t just a vacation; it ⁢was a shift in perspective. It reminded me that⁢ travel ⁣isn’t just ‍about ticking off destinations ⁢on a checklist, but ‍about savoring the moments, embracing the unexpected, and connecting with the soul of‍ a place.

In rediscovering Europe by train, I rediscovered the beauty of slow⁣ travel, ‍of allowing⁢ time to unfold, of immersing myself in the rhythm of a new place. The train tracks ⁤became pathways to not just distant cities, but to a deeper understanding⁤ of the continent’s rich history, diverse cultures, and stunning landscapes.

As ⁣we navigate the challenges of climate change, embracing‌ sustainable travel options becomes ⁣increasingly crucial. Interrail,⁢ with its efficient network and vibrant community of fellow travelers, offers a compelling alternative to the fleeting convenience of air travel. It’s a chance to explore Europe responsibly, meaningfully, and with a‍ newfound appreciation for the treasures that‍ lie beyond⁣ the crowded⁤ airport terminals.
The sensory overload and frenetic pace of modern travel can leave us feeling depleted rather than invigorated. Choosing to embrace the slower, more mindful journey offered by interrailing allows for a deeper exploration of the places we visit, fostering recognition for the journey itself rather than rushing from one landmark to the next. It’s a journey of revelation, not just of iconic sights, but also of the hidden gems, local cultures, and personal insights that await along the way. While the convenience of air travel is alluring, interrailing offers a enduring and enriching alternative, proving that sometimes, the greatest journey is the one that encourages us to slow down, savor the moment, and reconnect with the world around us.
