Advancements in Alzheimer’s Research: Progress During National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month

November 29, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

Advancements in Alzheimer’s Disease Research

November is National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Recent scientific advancements have improved our understanding of Alzheimer’s Disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD).

Dementia arises from genetic, lifestyle, and environmental factors. Over the past decade, researchers have identified more than 80 genetic areas linked to AD/ADRD. This ongoing research informs new strategies for risk reduction, prevention, and therapy.

One significant study, funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA), found that risk genes often overlap across neurodegenerative diseases. This study highlighted a new gene linked to the resilience of brain cells against Alzheimer’s disease.

Researchers are also examining gene variants that may delay or protect against dementia. For example, a study showed that a rare protective gene variant could delay Alzheimer’s onset in those predisposed to the disease. Another study indicated that a well-known Alzheimer’s gene does not significantly predict risk in certain populations, emphasizing the need for diverse clinical study participation.

Current research employs advanced imaging and tests to identify biomarkers for dementia. Techniques like positron emission tomography (PET) scans and spinal fluid tests help in these efforts. Scientists are developing blood-based biomarkers for precise diagnoses. A recent study showed a new biomarker can help identify ALS and frontotemporal dementia (FTD) before symptoms arise.

Improving Diagnosis and Treatment

Efforts are underway to enhance dementia diagnosis and cognitive assessments. New diagnostic tools can lead to earlier detection, enabling better monitoring and care. Current research indicates that dementia is often not diagnosed in primary care, particularly among minority groups. Innovative assessment techniques could bridge this gap and widen clinical trial participation.

An NINDS-funded clinical trial found that a short cognitive assessment improved dementia care in Black and Hispanic older adults. Integrating this assessment into electronic medical records ensures timely access to support services and healthcare planning.

Lifestyle interventions may also help reduce dementia risk. Studies show that using hearing aids can mitigate cognitive decline in older adults. Another found that lowering blood pressure reduced the risk of developing mild cognitive impairment over five years. The Mind Your Risks campaign raises awareness about mid-life hypertension and its connection to dementia, particularly in high-risk groups.

Future of AD/ADRD Research

While progress is encouraging, there remains a need for continued research to support families facing AD/ADRD. The NIH regularly hosts summits to refine research priorities for dementia care.

The next ADRD Summit will be held on March 25-26, 2025. Public feedback on research recommendations contributes to the National Plan to Address Alzheimer’s Disease.

The work done by NINDS aims to enhance understanding and treatment of AD/ADRD. It is essential to maintain hope for the millions affected by Alzheimer’s disease now and in the future.
