Advocacy Group Urges Faster Mobile and Internet Upgrades for Gippsland
Call for Improved Mobile and Internet Communications
Regional advocacy group One Gippsland has urged for better mobile and internet services, particularly during natural disasters. This call follows the recent closure of 3G networks by telecom carriers and the upcoming recommendations from a Federal Government regional telecommunications review.
David Morcom, spokesperson for One Gippsland and CEO of Wellington Shire, emphasized that telecommunications must be treated as an essential service. He argued that providers should prevent significant and prolonged outages during disasters. Additionally, he highlighted the need for reasonable service standards in low-population areas and for at least 72 hours of backup power during emergencies.
Gippsland has faced nearly 40 bushfires, floods, and severe storms in the last decade. The region also attracts many tourists during peak holiday times, making it critical to inform visitors about potential disasters.
One Gippsland includes representatives from six local councils, tourism, education, Aboriginal groups, and primary producers. It focuses on regional issues and advocates for government policies that foster economic growth.
Currently, TPG Telecom/Vodafone has already turned off its 3G network, while Telstra and Optus began shutting down their 3G services on October 28.
