Aer Lingus to End Cork to Amsterdam Flights
Aer Lingus to Axe Cork-Amsterdam Route, Leaving Travelers Scrambling
Cork, Ireland - Travelers between Cork and Amsterdam are facing a major disruption as Aer Lingus announced the cancellation of its direct service starting March 17, 2025. The move has left regular passengers like Maya Sullivan, a Cork native living in Rotterdam, frustrated and facing inconvenient alternatives.
aer Lingus has contacted customers with existing bookings after the cutoff date, offering alternative travel options or refunds. Cork Airport confirmed the airline’s decision, expressing gratitude for Aer Lingus‘s 26 years of service on the route.”We would like to thank Aer Lingus for their 26 years of continual service on this route,” a Cork Airport spokesperson said. “Simultaneously occurring, direct connectivity with Amsterdam Schiphol will be maintained with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines offering twice-daily services to Amsterdam, with the ability to connect onwards to over 150 destinations.”
Though, this alternative comes at a cost. Sullivan, who frequently flies Aer Lingus due to its affordability compared to KLM, expressed her disappointment.
“I always fly Aer Lingus to Amsterdam, it is a lot cheaper than KLM,” Sullivan told The Echo. ”It’s been busy every time I’ve flown, even though the flight from Cork to Amsterdam is always at 6am it’s normally still full or nearly full, so it seems wierd they are cancelling it.”
The cancellation forces travelers like Sullivan to choose between considerably more expensive flights with KLM or embarking on a lengthy journey involving buses and flights from Dublin.
“It will mean anyone who wants to visit me will have to get to Cork City, get the bus to Dublin then fly out and then fly back to Dublin and get the bus back to Cork and then back to West Cork which is super inconvenient,” Sullivan lamented. “and also I will have to do that to get home!”
Aer Lingus defended its decision, citing a review of its route network and changing travel demands.
“Services between Cork and Amsterdam will be discontinued from March 17. This decision was made after a thorough review of our route network and in response to changing travel demands,” an Aer Lingus spokesperson stated.
The airline emphasized its commitment to Cork, highlighting the launch of two new summer routes from Cork Airport to Bilbao and Bordeaux.
