Documentary “Champions of the Golden Valley” Highlights Afghan Skiers’ Olympic Dreams
The inspiring story of Afghan skiers striving for Olympic participation is now available worldwide through Olympics.com. “Champions of the Golden Valley” follows Alishah Farhang, who dreamed of competing in the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics adn subsequently established a ski program in his home province of Bamyan.
Building a Ski Community Amidst Challenges
Farhang’s initiative created an annual ski competition open to athletes of all ages and skill levels from across the region. Despite limited resources – many participants used second-hand equipment or even skis crafted from wood - the event fostered a sense of unity and hope within the community. The program exemplified the Olympic spirit by promoting peaceful competition and providing motivation for the next generation.
A Story of Displacement and Enduring Hope
Filmed primarily in Afghanistan before 2021, the documentary incorporates narration from Farhang, who currently resides in Germany as a refugee with his family. His story underscores the power of sport to transcend political and personal hardship.
