AFP Warns: Fake News Risks Amid Ayungin Video Resurgence
AFP Warns Against Recycled Footage Used to Spread disinformation on West Philippine Sea
MANILA – The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has issued a stern warning to the public against the proliferation of fake news and disinformation concerning military operations in the West Philippine Sea. This alert comes in response to recent attempts to mislead the public by circulating recycled video footage, a tactic the AFP describes as a direct threat to national integrity and unity.
Deceptive Tactics aim to Manipulate Public Perception
In a statement released over the weekend, the military specifically called out false claims circulating online that misrepresent an old incident at Ayungin Shoal as a new confrontation. The AFP emphasized that such deceptive tactics are not only irresponsible but are designed to “manipulate public perception, distort the truth, and weaken our shared resolve in asserting the nation’s sovereign rights and jurisdiction.”
The warning was prompted by a report from a Chinese-affiliated social media news page, which falsely claimed that China Coast Guard (CCG) personnel had blocked and towed Philippine resupply boats at Ayungin Shoal. However, the video footage used in the report was identified as originating from a past encounter between the Philippine Navy and the CCG, which occurred last year near the BRP Sierra Madre, the Philippines’ military outpost at Ayungin Shoal.
Ayungin Shoal is situated within the Philippines’ 370-kilometer exclusive economic zone (EEZ), a fact underscored by the AFP in its statement.
AFP Reaffirms Commitment to Sovereignty and Truth
The AFP reiterated its unwavering commitment to protecting Philippine sovereignty, emphasizing that all its actions are firmly grounded in the Constitution and international law. This includes adherence to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and the landmark 2016 Arbitral Award, which invalidated China’s expansive claims in the South China Sea.
“The truth is our strongest defense,” the AFP declared, urging the public to exercise critical thinking, diligently verify data, and rely solely on credible and official sources for news and updates. The military stressed that disinformation poses a important threat to the nation’s integrity and unity.
The Philippines and China remain engaged in a maritime dispute over various features in the West Philippine Sea, a critical part of the South china Sea that Beijing claims entirely as its own. The Permanent Court of Arbitration’s 2016 ruling, which invalidated China’s claims, has been consistently disregarded by Beijing.
