KAMPALA, Uganda – The Africa Industrialization Week (AIW) 2025 officially launched today at the Speke resort Munyonyo, located on the shores of lake Victoria. The event has attracted over 500 delegates from across the African continent.
hosted by Uganda’s Ministry of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives (MTIC) in collaboration with the african Union (AU) and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the five-day event will continue through November 21. The overarching theme is “Transforming Africa’s Economy through Sustainable Industrialization, Regional Integration and Innovation.”
Opening Ceremony Highlights
Uganda’s Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Hon.David Bahati, inaugurated the event, stressing the critical need for africa to move beyond reliance on raw material exports and embrace value-added manufacturing. “This week is not just a gathering; it’s a catalyst for reimagining how Africa produces, trades, and thrives,” bahati stated, highlighting the importance of regional integration through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).
Lynette B. Bagonza, permanent Secretary of the MTIC, set the tone for the week, emphasizing the commitment to fostering a conducive environment for industrial growth.
The Importance of AfCFTA
The African continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which became operational in January 2021, is expected to be a central topic of discussion throughout AIW 2025. The AfCFTA aims to create a single market for goods and services across Africa, perhaps boosting intra-african trade by as much as 52.2% by 2022, according to UNCTAD. This increased trade is projected to contribute significantly to Africa’s economic growth and industrialization.
Experts believe that the AfCFTA will encourage investment in manufacturing and processing industries, creating jobs and diversifying African economies. However, successful implementation requires addressing challenges related to infrastructure, trade facilitation, and regulatory harmonization.
Sustainable Industrialization: A Key Pillar
The theme of sustainable industrialization underscores the growing recognition that economic growth must be environmentally responsible. AIW 2025 is expected to explore strategies for promoting green technologies, resource efficiency, and circular economy models in African industries. This includes discussions on renewable energy, waste management, and sustainable agricultural practices.
The event will also likely address the social dimensions of industrialization, including the need for inclusive growth, decent work, and skills development.
