Femi Elufowoju Jr. Stages ‘54.60 Africa’ play After Continent Journey
After building a reputation as an authority on African culture in British theater, femi Elufowoju Jr. embarked on a seven-year journey to visit all 54 African nations. This ambitious quest culminated in his new theatrical project, “54.60 Africa,” now showing at the Arcola theatre in London.
Elufowoju’s journey began during a 2015 tour with theater company Complicité in Cape Town. He realized his understanding of Africa was limited despite his Nigerian heritage. This realization spurred him to explore the continent’s vast complexity.
His travels challenged preconceived notions. encounters ranged from a receptionist’s surprise at seeing a Black guest in Swaziland to a gardener’s heartfelt conversation about connecting with a fellow “brother.” These experiences revealed a different Africa than the one frequently enough portrayed in global narratives.
