After building a reputation as an ⁢authority⁤ on African culture in British theater, femi Elufowoju Jr. embarked on a seven-year journey to visit all 54 African ⁣nations.⁢ This ambitious quest culminated in ⁤his new theatrical‌ project, “54.60 Africa,” now showing at the⁣ Arcola theatre in London.

Elufowoju’s journey began during a 2015 tour with⁢ theater company​ Complicité in ‌Cape ⁢Town. He realized ​his understanding of Africa was limited despite his‍ Nigerian heritage. This realization‌ spurred him to explore the continent’s vast⁢ complexity.

His travels challenged preconceived notions.⁤ encounters ranged from a receptionist’s surprise at⁤ seeing a Black guest in Swaziland to⁤ a gardener’s heartfelt conversation about connecting with a fellow “brother.” These ⁢experiences revealed a different ⁢Africa than the one frequently⁤ enough ​portrayed in global narratives.
