People’s Party Legislator Huang Guochang Responds to Allegations

On November 21, 2024, People’s Party legislator Huang Guochang addressed accusations regarding a meeting with Xie Yirong, the former director of the Northern Branch of the Department of Labor and Development. This meeting occurred after a civil servant’s suicide at the department. Allegations suggest that Huang’s office had offered assurances not to escalate the situation but later questioned the motivations behind Huang’s office’s actions.

After the news of the suicide broke, political commentator Li Zhenhao claimed that Huang Guochang’s office had assured the department that they would not exaggerate the incident nor cause further distress to the family involved. These claims have led to questions about Huang’s approach to the situation.

During a press conference held by the People’s Party in collaboration with the Youth UNESCO Association, Huang Guochang responded to these allegations. He explained that his team was informed about the suicide shortly after it occurred and sought explanations from the Department of Labor and Development. Huang stated that the department’s personnel were present during these discussions and described an emotional scene with Xie Yirong.

Huang criticized the government for its handling of the incident, expressing that the public’s grief over the tragedy should be met with appropriate actions, rather than blame-shifting. He urged the government to avoid further missteps, stating that current actions are frustrating the Taiwanese people.

Additionally, the People’s Party is preparing to elect a new party representative by the end of the year. Party Secretary-General Zhou Yuxiu announced that the signing process for candidates began today. Huang added a light note, sharing a conversation with a party member who faced issues in registering for the election.

In response to inquiries about former legislator Kai Biru’s interest in a deputy chair position, Zhou confirmed that all party functions continue as usual, emphasizing the party’s readiness and enthusiasm.
