Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition will launch natively on macOS on May 28, 2026, via Steam. The release marks the first official path for Mac users to enter the franchise in more than two decades.
The port was handled by specialist studio Feral Interactive. While the Steam version arrives on May 28, 2026, a separate release on the Mac App Store is planned for later in 2026.
This native launch renders previous official guidance obsolete. Until this announcement, the official support documentation listed the game as Windows-only and directed Mac users to use Parallels as a workaround.
The macOS version is not a stripped-down port of the game. According to reporting from Gadget Hacks, the base package includes the original Age of Kings campaign and The Conquerors expansion.
The initial Steam release also includes three recent downloadable content additions: Lords of the West, Dynasties of India, and Dawn of the Dukes.
Users seeking further content can purchase additional expansions separately. Every expansion released on PC, including the most recent The Last Chieftains, will be available for purchase on the Mac platform.
This version differs significantly from the 1999 original. The Definitive Edition features updated graphics, a remastered soundtrack, and approximately 20 years of quality-of-life improvements.
The Definitive Edition has been available on PC since November 2019. However, the original Age of Empires II had not appeared on Mac since 2001.
