During the winter of 2025, CDRV members were invited to submit popular science texts based on their research projects. A committee comprised of two scientists and a communications specialist evaluated the submissions, selecting the most effective and engaging explanations.
The CDRV and its Popular Science Initiative
The CDRV’s annual popular science competition demonstrates a commitment to translating complex scientific research into understandable and engaging content for the public. This approach aims to increase public awareness of aging-related research and its potential impact on health and well-being. The CIUSSS de l’Estrie – CHUS supports this initiative as part of its broader mission to improve healthcare access and outcomes.
Understanding Long COVID and the Role of Exercise
Long COVID, also known as post-COVID condition, is characterized by a wide range of symptoms that persist for weeks or months after the initial COVID-19 infection. these symptoms can include fatigue, shortness of breath, cognitive dysfunction (“brain fog”),muscle pain, and more. The underlying mechanisms of long COVID are still being investigated, but potential factors include persistent viral reservoirs, immune dysregulation, and microvascular damage.
Exercise, when appropriately prescribed, can address several of these underlying issues. It can improve cardiovascular function, enhance muscle strength and endurance, and promote neuroplasticity. Though, it’s crucial to avoid “pushing through” symptoms, as this can exacerbate fatigue and other issues. A graded exercise therapy approach, starting with low-intensity activities and gradually increasing the intensity and duration, is generally recommended.
| Symptom | Potential Exercise Benefit | Caution |
|---|---|---|
| Fatigue | Improved mitochondrial function, increased energy levels | Start with very low intensity; avoid overexertion. |
| Shortness of Breath
