A recent clinical trial ⁢conducted at Chiba University in Japan suggests that nicotinamide riboside (NR) may offer benefits for individuals with Werner syndrome (WS), a rare genetic condition characterized by accelerated aging. The study, led by Associate Professor Masaya Koshizaka,⁤ explored the impact of NR⁢ supplementation on key health⁢ markers in WS patients.

Werner syndrome, affecting approximately nine in⁤ a million people in Japan, ‍leads⁤ to premature⁣ development of age-related conditions such as gray⁢ hair, cataracts, and⁢ diabetes. Patients also often suffer from severe skin ulcers and face early mortality due to cardiovascular⁤ issues or cancer. Currently, effective treatments are ⁤lacking.

The‍ research, published in Aging Cell, involved a double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover ⁣trial. Participants received ⁤either NR or a placebo ⁢for 26 weeks,then switched treatments. ⁢The team monitored NAD+ levels,skin ulcer size,arterial stiffness,and kidney function.

The study found that NR supplementation considerably increased NAD+ levels in the blood.
