Agon Sports Makes Historic Move, Signs Four Cuban Olympic Boxing Stars

Agon Sports has signed four Cuban Olympic medalists, marking a significant moment in boxing history.

After securing the deal for IBF world champion William Scull, who will face WBA, WBC, and WBO champion Canelo Alvarez in May, Agon Sports has made another groundbreaking move. The Berlin-based promotion firm, led by Dr. Ingo Volckmann, has signed four Cuban Olympic medalists, including several legendary boxers. This move not only solidifies Agon Sports’ position as a leading player in the international boxing scene but also sets the stage for a historic event in Varadero, Cuba.

The Historic Event and Its Impact

The signed athletes include Arlen Lopez (2x Olympic, 1x Olympic bronze, 1x World Cup gold), Julio Cesar La Cruz (2x Olympic, 5x World Cup, 1x World Cup bronze), Erislandy Alvarez (1x Olympic, 1x World Championship silver), and Lazaro Alvarez (3x, 3x World Cup gold, 2x World Cup silver). These boxers, already legends in the amateur circuit, are embarking on their professional careers under the Agon banner. Agon Sports is not the only stable to offer contracts, but the decision was made to go with Agon, after other well-known boxing stables had also made initial offers.

A First for Modern Boxing History

Agon Sports is set to organize the first professional boxing event in Cuba in modern history. This exclusive event will take place at the luxurious 5-star Hotel Melia Internacional in Varadero, marking a historic shift in Cuban boxing. Professional boxing from Cuba has been non-existent since the Cuban Revolution and the rise of Fidel Castro. Agon Sports aims to rewrite boxing history with this unprecedented event.
“This is a historical moment for boxing. Never before has there been such an event on Cuban soil and it is a great honor for us to work with these absolute elite boxers. Agon Sports thus sets a clear sign for international professional boxing,” explains promoter Ingo Volckmann.

This monumental step not only signifies a new era for Cuban boxing but also establishes Agon Sports as a leading promoter in Europe and beyond. The event will feature four top Cuban stars under the Agon banner, with plans for professional titles for all five fighters.

Peter Volckmann added, “The cooperation with Agon really seems to be forward-looking for the future of boxing, Interestingly, in the past, many skilful Cuban boxing talents were on the run to USA or Mexico and other Latin American countries, searching for a sustainable career in professional boxing. Agon Sports expresses its international ambition perfectly, promising a lot further coverage in plans at the Binational front, including a potential Miami mega-event in the long run, although these are plans of the future.

The Road to Cuba

The project was not without challenges. Matchmaker Flavio Oleaga Mirabal, who recently joined Agon, maintained strong relationships with the Cuban sports officials for many years. The negotiation process lasted months, involving extensive discussions with Cuban authorities to secure the exclusive rights for the first professional boxing event in Cuba.
The matchmaker highlights our pioneering spirit: this historical event signifies the start of a long-term cooperation, while establishing the exclusive cooperation in long-term professional contracts.
“I have had a good connection to the Olympic team and the sports officials in Cuba for many years. We have negotiated with the Cuban authorities for many months in order to be able to set up this great agreement. Many promoters have already tried what we succeeded – unsuccessfully. Now we have reached an exclusive agreement that not only provides for two events in Cuba per year and another in another country, but also write boxing history with the first professional event in Cuba. ” explains.

Building the Future of Cuban Boxing

Agon Sports’ vision goes beyond a single event. The promotion aims to establish professional boxing in Cuba sustainably. This initiative is supported by the Cuban boxing federation, which sees the benefit of having its athletes compete professionally while representing Cuba internationally.
The goal is to maintain professional boxing contracts amongst Cuban amateurs in a similar manner as we have seen boxers from the Cuban lost generation joining professional boxing in the past through risky exits made through due political agility.
As a pioneer with such endeavors, Agon Sports has received full support from Cuba’s boxing president Alberto Puig, in ensuring the athletes find stable professional contracts through the promotion of stable-deals, veering away from the previous risk endeavors.

Plans for the Future

The initial event is slated for April, with another planned for later in the year. If successful, Agon Sports intends to expand the cooperation with Cuba, potentially organizing more events and growing the professional boxing landscape in the country.

“Many Cuban boxers have had to leave their homes in the past in order to be able to become active as professionals. We want to change that, because our goal is to establish professional boxes in Cuba. The Cuban boxing association also has an interest in the fact that the athletes Cuba also represented as professionals abroad, which is why we will not only organize them in Cuba. We have the exclusive rights for these unusual boxers in the professional area and want to build long -term cooperation together with the Cuban side. The first event is planned for April, followed by another later in the year. If everything goes well, we will further expand the cooperation. It is a big project with enormous potential, and we look forward to creating something unique together with Cuba.

Broadcasting Plans

Negotiations with renowned broadcasting channels are already underway to televise this historic event. The global broadcasting rights to highlight the magnitude of this event and attract worldwide viewership and boxing enthusiasts.
