Agustín Arce has emerged as a key figure for Universidad de Chile following his standout performance in the Clásico Universitario against Universidad Católica, where he was named the best player on the field and delivered a clear message to head coach Fernando Gago about his ambitions.

The 21-year-old academy product, who returned from loan spells at San Luis and Deportes Limache, started the match and played a pivotal role in Universidad de Chile’s 1-0 victory. Speaking to TNT Sports after the final whistle, Arce emphasized the team’s focus and execution, stating, “We played an excellent match, we deserved the victory to keep climbing the table, which is what’s important. We said it in the locker room: go out to win in a derby and we managed to get the victory.”

Arce made it clear that his immediate goal is to secure and maintain his place in the starting lineup. “I’m very happy to play this kind of match, I’ve been waiting for it for a long time. We were informed before the match about my starting role, I got excited and went out to earn my spot, which is what’s important,” he said. He added that he focused solely on giving his all and performing well, noting that he had worked hard to reach this moment of playing as a starter for Universidad de Chile.

His performance drew praise from teammates and analysts alike. Gonzalo Fouillioux, commenting on Bolavip, stated plainly, “He was the best,” referring to Arce’s influence in midfield during the clash. Former player Hugo Droguett also lauded the young midfielder, saying he “showed the most” and filled him with praise for his display in the high-stakes fixture.

The victory marked Universidad de Chile’s first significant win under Fernando Gago’s tenure, with Juan Martín Lucero scoring the lone goal. However, Arce’s individual contribution stood out as one of the most notable aspects of the match, particularly given his youth and recent return to the squad. His composure and energy in central midfield helped control tempo and support both defensive and attacking phases.

Arce’s journey back to relevance at Universidad de Chile began after gaining experience abroad on loan. His return coincided with Gago’s arrival, and the coach has since integrated him into plans, culminating in the starting role for the derby. Arce acknowledged the trust placed in him, saying the pre-match notification of his starting status motivated him to respond with a strong performance.

Now, with the win over their arch-rivals secured, Arce’s focus remains on continuity. His message to Gago was unambiguous: earning the starting spot through consistent performance is his top priority, not just for one match but as a sustained effort to cement his role in the team’s future.
