Air India confirmed the fatalities in a statement, noting that among the passengers were 169 Indian, 53 British, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian national.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site and Civil Hospital in Ahmedabad on Friday to meet with those injured.He was accompanied by Gujarat chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, Union Civil Aviation minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, and Union Minister CR Paatil.
Air India has set up assistance centers at airports in Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, and Gatwick to support the families of those aboard the flight. Dedicated passenger hotline numbers are available both within India (1800 5691 444) and from outside India (+91 8062779200).
Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a 40-year-old British national of Indian origin, is the sole survivor. He is being treated at Civil Hospital in Asarwa, Ahmedabad, for relatively minor injuries sustained after exiting through an emergency exit.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah, calling the incident a “national tragedy,” also visited the survivor and relatives of the deceased. He confirmed that DNA identification is underway to identify the victims due to the intensity of the fire after the Ahmedabad plane crash.
