South Korea Needs 100,000 Carbon Designers by 2050
South Korea must train 100,000 carbon neutrality designers to meet its 2050 climate goals instead of relying strictly on greenhouse gas calculations and technology development. Former Vice Minister of Environment Ahn Byung-ok outlined this target in an interview with hani.co.kr on October 12, 2026. To drive the initiative, Ahn launched a non-profit organization called Carbon Neutrality Academy Namu on October 14, 2026, serving as an educational platform for practitioners across government, corporate, and civil society sectors.
Ahn compared current dieting methods that focus solely on reducing food intake while ignoring lifestyle and sleep habits to the present approach to climate policy. Cutting greenhouse gas emissions without altering industrial production methods and citizen habits leads to limited results and potential rebounds similar to the yo-yo effect in weight loss.
Bridging the Corporate Sustainability Skills Gap
The newly established Carbon Neutrality Academy Namu aims to address a critical shortage of field-level personnel who can execute climate policies effectively. Strict global climate regulations impact international supply chains and trade, but many small and medium-sized enterprises lack the necessary staff and financial resources to implement carbon reduction plans. Furthermore, corporate sustainability officers often struggle to present clear financial loss-and-profit data to convince executive management to change production systems.
Ahn drew inspiration from the historical Joseon Dynasty strategy of training 100,000 elite soldiers to form his goal of cultivating 100,000 carbon neutrality designers. The name Namu combines the natural concept of a tree with the Korean phrasing for zero carbon originating from oneself.
Eight-Week Professional Training Modules for 2027
Starting in the first half of 2027, the academy will offer an eight-week professional course designed to give employees from corporations, public institutions, and civic groups actionable decarbonization plans for their workplaces. Additional specialized modules will cover artificial intelligence applications in carbon neutrality and Renewable Energy 100 standards.
The most important thing is the thought that the health of the Earth and my health are not separated.
Ahn Byung-ok
For general citizens, alternative courses will avoid inducing helplessness by moving past abstract warnings of climate disaster to highlight functioning communities and alternative technologies. Instructors such as Korea Social Responsibility Investment Forum executive director Kim Tae-han will participate in teaching the programs.
Structural Reforms and the Four-and-a-Half-Day Work Week
Beyond educational frameworks, Ahn emphasized that individual sacrifice alone cannot sustain long-term environmental habits, much like overly restrictive diets. He pointed to Sweden’s 2011 One Ton Life project, where a four-person family cut annual per capita carbon emissions from 7.3 tons to 1.5 tons after receiving corporate support for energy-efficient housing, electric vehicles, and renewable energy technologies.
Ahn also identified a 4.5-day work week as a low-cost method for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by simultaneously lowering commuting-related carbon output. The academy’s inaugural ceremony took place on October 14, 2026, in Seoul, following its organizational establishment.
