Abu Dhabi Ascends as a Global AI Powerhouse: A 61% Surge in Companies Signals Maturity
Abu Dhabi is rapidly solidifying its position as a leading global hub for artificial intelligence (AI), experiencing an unprecedented surge in sector growth. Data from the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce adn Industry reveals a remarkable 61% increase in AI-specialized companies between June 2023 and June 2024,bringing the total to 673. This explosive growth underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to becoming a knowledge economy driven by innovation and future technologies.
With an estimated 90,904 companies operating within the broader AI landscape as of 2024, Abu Dhabi is demonstrably the fastest-growing AI center in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region. This isn’t simply a numerical increase; it reflects a dynamic ecosystem attracting entrepreneurs, scientists, and global leaders seeking an ideal environment for enterprising technological projects.
Central to this transformation is the Mohammed bin Zayed University of Artificial Intelligence (MBZUAI), the world’s first graduate-level, research-based AI university. MBZUAI is attracting international talent and establishing itself as a global center of excellence, fueling the emirate’s AI capabilities.
Abu dhabi’s commitment extends beyond academia. The emirate is actively establishing international standards for AI adoption across strategic sectors, supported by a robust system of institutions and bodies. This includes the Council of Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technology, responsible for shaping policies and strategies related to scientific research, infrastructure growth, and investment in AI and advanced technologies.
Further bolstering the ecosystem are key players like the Advanced Technology Research Council, the Institute of Technology Innovation, the AI71 Center for Applied Solutions, Abu Dhabi Hub71’s global tech ecosystem, G42 technology Group, and space 42 Space Technology. this integrated approach demonstrates a unified effort to build a future-focused economy.
The Abu Dhabi Chamber’s data further reveals that over 58% of AI companies in the emirate are focused on innovation, research, and consulting, indicating a shift from early adoption to maturity and practical institutional submission. The first half of 2024 alone saw the establishment of 150 new AI companies.
“The artificial intelligence sector in the emirate is witnessing an accelerated shift…to the stage of maturity and actual institutional application, with increasing activities focused on scientific research, strategic consultations, and advanced institutional solutions,” stated Shams Shamsa Al-Dhaheri, Second Vice Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Abu Dhabi Chamber.Looking ahead, the Abu Dhabi Chamber’s new strategic roadmap for 2025-2028 prioritizes enhancing ease of doing business, developing supportive policies, and strengthening economic integration.A dedicated working group comprised of sector leaders is actively shaping the future of AI in Abu Dhabi, ensuring continued growth and innovation.
