Wall Street banks are increasingly using artificial intelligence to automate work and reduce head count, even as they report strong quarterly profits. Executives from major financial institutions including JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley have collectively reported $47 billion in profits for the first quarter of 2026, an 18 percent increase from the same period a year earlier, while shedding approximately 15,000 employees.

Bank of America chief executive Brian T. Moynihan initially told employees in late 2025 that they did not need to worry about artificial intelligence replacing their jobs. However, after reporting $8.6 billion in first-quarter profit — $1.6 billion more than the prior year — Moynihan stated that the bank’s improved bottom line was aided by shedding 1,000 jobs through attrition by “eliminating work and applying technology,” which he explicitly identified as artificial intelligence.

Citigroup has pledged to reduce its workforce by 20,000 employees as part of what one executive described to analysts as the company’s “productivity and efficiency journey.” The bank is deploying AI software from Anthropic, Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI to automate tasks such as reading legal documents, approving account openings, sending trade invoices, and organizing customer data. Recent job cuts at Citigroup have included employees from its internal “A.I. Champions and Accelerators” program, which trains staff to promote AI adoption among colleagues.

JPMorgan Chase’s consumer and community banking chief, Marianne Lake, said at a Goldman Sachs financial services conference that the bank had doubled productivity in certain operations to 6 percent from a previous 3 percent through AI use. She noted that operation specialists’ productivity is expected to grow by 40 to 50 percent due to AI, which reduces the net impact on jobs. Lake described AI as the most significant technological shift since the rise of the internet, acknowledging both its investment potential and the anxiety it creates around job displacement.

Wells Fargo CEO Charlie Scharf said the bank has not reduced its total head count but emphasized that AI enables employees to accomplish more with fewer people. “We’re getting a lot more done” because of AI, Scharf stated, adding that there are opportunities to “do things significantly different” without fully replacing human workers. PNC Financial CEO Bill Demchak noted that while the bank’s head count has remained flat over the past decade despite significant growth, AI is acting as an accelerant on existing automation efforts, particularly in technology hiring.

The automation driven by AI spans both back-office functions — where tens of thousands of employees handle regulatory paperwork and compliance — and front-office roles involving high-salaried professionals who structure complex financial transactions for corporate clients. Despite public assurances that AI will augment rather than replace workers, the trend of job reductions tied to AI implementation continues to grow across the industry during the current earnings season.
