AI Helps Police Nab Hit-and-Run Suspect in Nagpur
As of August 17, 2025, a harrowing case of a hit-and-run accident in Maharashtra has reached a swift resolution thanks to the innovative use of artificial intelligence. The Nagpur Police have successfully apprehended the suspect responsible for the death of a woman, following a widely circulated video that sparked outrage across India.
A week ago, a video surfaced online depicting Amit Yadav carrying the body of his wife along a highway after she was struck by a truck. Yadav claimed he was forced to transport her remains this way after receiving no assistance from passersby on the Nagpur-Jabalpur national highway on August 9.The deeply disturbing footage quickly went viral, highlighting both the tragedy of the accident and the apparent lack of immediate aid.
Though, the inquiry rapidly progressed with the assistance of cutting-edge technology. Deolapar Police utilized AI-MARVEL – the Maharashtra advanced Research and Vigilance for Enhanced Law Enforcement system - to analyze hours of CCTV footage from toll plazas.
“we used AI algorithms developed at MARVEL to analyze four hours of footage from three toll nakas,” explained Harssh A Poddar to the Indian Express. “The first algorithm sieved out all the red trucks, and the second algorithm did a speed-based calculation of these trucks to identify which truck could be involved. On the basis of the AI alert generated, we arrested the accused yesterday from 700 km away near Kanpur.”
The driver was identified as Satyapal Rajendra,a 28-year-old resident of Farrukhabad in Uttar Pradesh. His truck was impounded on August 16, and he is now in police custody, according to reports from the Press Trust of India (PTI).
This case underscores a growing trend: the integration of AI in law enforcement. As cities become increasingly monitored by CCTV cameras, AI-powered analytical tools are proving invaluable in swiftly identifying suspects and solving crimes. The success in Nagpur demonstrates the potential for similar technologies to enhance public safety and bring closure to victims and their families across India. The use of AI in this instance not only delivered justice in a timely manner but also sends a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated, even across vast distances.
