Halamka acknowledged the ⁢complexities of⁢ AI adoption, urging the healthcare industry to focus on practical applications. He stressed that AI’s value lies in solving specific operational and clinical challenges,⁢ rather than simply⁣ following trends.

A key challenge is reconciling the tech sector’s rapid innovation with healthcare’s commitment⁤ to patient ⁤safety. Halamka highlighted Mayo Clinic’s iterative approach, starting ⁢with small-scale trials ​before wider deployment.⁤ he cited ‌their remote patient monitoring program, ​which began with a single patient and now serves 50,000, demonstrating comparable or better outcomes ⁤than⁣ conventional hospital care,‍ with lower costs and higher patient satisfaction.

Halamka differentiated between predictive AI, which identifies patterns,⁤ and generative AI, which creates new content. Tools‍ like AI “data cards” and‍ “model ‌cards” provide insights into model growth ‌and limitations, enabling clinicians ⁣to assess suitability for diverse patient populations. He⁣ cautioned against applying algorithms ‍developed​ on one population to another without proper testing.
