Intermountain Health Taps AI to Streamline Clinical Data Role
intermountain Health is partnering with Layer Health, an artificial intelligence company, to deploy its AI platform across multiple clinical registries. Intermountain Ventures, the health system’s venture capital arm, is making a strategic investment in Layer Health as part of the collaboration. The goal is to improve the accuracy and efficiency of clinical data abstraction.
the multi-year initiative will see Intermountain Health become an early adopter of Layer Health’s AI-powered chart-review platform. The AI platform’s primary role is to automate medical chart reviews, a process critical for quality reporting and registry submission.
Layer Health’s platform uses large language models trained on patient data to interpret both structured and unstructured clinical details. The HIPAA-compliant platform replicates a clinician’s reasoning process to handle complex patient records.
Intermountain’s Clinical Data Management team will validate the AI’s accuracy before full deployment to ensure it meets clinical performance standards. The initial focus will be on registries for stroke, bariatric surgery, and cardiovascular disease. The AI platform will then be deployed across Intermountain Health’s network of 33 hospitals and multiple states, with plans for future expansion to other registry areas.
“Layer Health’s technology reflects the kind of AI solution that will drive meaningful change for our system,” said Dr. Cara Camiolo Reddy, chief quality and safety officer at Intermountain Health. “Layer offers a scalable approach that allows us to support existing registries more efficiently and finally move forward with new ones. Furthermore, with the support of AI, our team can focus more on driving meaningful improvements in patient care.”
What’s next
Intermountain Health plans to expand the use of layer Health’s AI platform to other clinical areas after the initial deployment, further enhancing its data management capabilities and improving patient outcomes.
