Jointly hosted by the Medienanstalt Rheinland-Pfalz, the Landesanstalt für Kommunikation Baden-Württemberg, and the Landesmedienanstalt Saarland, the event focused on digital sovereignty, media literacy, and democratic resilience across Germany and Europe.
Uncertainty Among Youth Over AI Content
A central figure presented at the conference from the unreleased 2026 JIM study revealed that 61 percent of young people feel unsettled by the rise of artificial intelligence content on social media, leading them to question what remains real online. Organizers noted that as AI shifts how individuals handle information, creative inquiry, critical questioning, and an understanding of underlying systems are becoming vital skills for the public.
Perspectives on Digital Sovereignty and Regulation
Opening remarks from Dr. Marc Jan Eumann of the Medienanstalt Rheinland-Pfalz, Julia Jeske of the LFK, and Ruth Meyer of the LMS set the stage for addresses by regional and federal leaders. Rheinland-Pfalz Minister President Gordon Schnieder emphasized that digital sovereignty is essential for a free democracy, noting that media diversity and journalistic content must remain visible in an AI-driven landscape. Federal Minister of Justice Dr. Stefanie Hubig added that artificial intelligence can benefit society if properly steered, though core decisions must remain in human hands.
Prof. Dr. Andreas Dengel of the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence called for expanded digital capabilities in Europe, stressing the need for robust infrastructures and better research transfer rather than building every technology domestically. Dr. Benjamin Schiller from the Innovation Park Artificial Intelligence joined these discussions on European digital resilience and the creation of adequate operational leeway amid rapid tech development.
Live Deepfake Demonstrations and European Strategy
The conference featured live technical showcases highlighting both the risks of manipulated media and tools for detection. Christoph Maerz from the DFKI demonstrated how easily public video material can be turned into deepfakes using accessible AI tools, while simultaneously showing how the Gretchen AI tool detects such manipulations. Maximilian Negele of the Oxford Martin AI Governance Initiative and Gregor Freches, Minister for Sport, Culture, Tourism, and Media of the German-speaking Community of Belgium, further debated Europe’s competitive standing and regulatory frameworks, with moderation by Albrecht Bähr. A second panel featuring Prof. Dr. Mandy Schiefner-Rohs, Prof. Dr. Sebastian Vollmer, and Pauline Schinkels explored media literacy as a core competency for democratic judgment.
