new Treatments for Geographic Atrophy May Not Be Available Until 2028
Retina specialists should continue utilizing currently FDA-approved treatments for geographic atrophy (GA) as promising therapies like vonaprument and elamipretide are not expected to be widely available until 2028 or later, according to Sunil Singh, MD.
Researchers are currently investigating visual cycle modulation, cell therapy, and neuroprotection as potential mechanisms for future GA treatments. Therapies in development specifically for GA and wet age-related macular degeneration include vonaprument (Annexon Biosciences) and elamipretide (Stealth BioTherapeutics).
“The call to arms right now is that new drugs won’t be out until 2028 or beyond,” Singh said.”We have drugs right now in our practice. I would not recommend waiting 2 years before instituting these therapies in your own practice.”
