Autodesk has unveiled a new set of updates across its Maya, 3ds Max, Flow Studio, and Arnold software suites, introducing artificial intelligence features designed to accelerate content creation workflows. Announced in late March 2026, the releases focus on reducing the time required to move from initial concept to final frame while maintaining artist control over the generated assets. The update addresses common production bottlenecks, such as complex quadruped animation and early-stage 3D modeling, by integrating generative tools directly into established pipelines.

AI-Powered Horse Animation in MotionMaker

A significant addition to Maya is the expansion of MotionMaker, an AI-assisted animation tool. Previously supporting biped and canine motion styles, the tool now includes a dedicated horse motion archetype. Animating quadrupeds traditionally involves significant manual work to ensure believable locomotion, including walks, trots, canters, and gallops. Transitions between these gaits are often technically difficult to execute smoothly without extensive rework.

With the new update, artists can generate a realistic base motion for horses in seconds using AI. The system allows users to define a path and choose specific actions, including jumps, without starting from scratch. Traditional motion capture for horses is costly and logistically challenging, but this tool provides a strong starting point that remains fully editable. Artists can refine the performance, timing, and character personality after generation. The motion style is also adaptable to other horse-like animals, such as deer or bison, expanding its utility beyond equine characters.

Generative 3D Workflows with Wonder 3D

Autodesk Flow Studio, formerly known as Wonder Studio, introduces Wonder 3D, a generative AI model built to help users move to 3D faster. This tool allows artists to generate 3D characters or objects from a simple text prompt or a reference image. The capability is positioned for use in previsualization, concept development, or quickly populating background scenes, and environments.

Assets generated through Wonder 3D are not locked into the result. Users can refine, remix, and reuse the assets before exporting them for use in 3ds Max, Maya, Blender, Unreal, or other tools. To streamline access to these workflows, a new Flow Studio Launcher button has been added directly to Maya, allowing users to open Flow Studio without leaving the interface.

Expanded AI Integration Across Tools

Beyond animation and modeling, AI features are being embedded into look development and user interaction. A new Generative Textures API in Maya enables studios to plug in the generative AI services they already use directly into LookdevX. This integration facilitates the exploration of multiple texture variations within the Maya environment.

Users can ask questions in plain language to quickly find tools or information, turning those answers into actionable steps within their workflow. This aims to reduce the time spent navigating complex menus or documentation during production.

Modernized Core Workflows

The releases also include updates to core production tools that function alongside the new AI capabilities. These enhancements focus on shot management, effects simulation, and geometry refinement.

  • Modernized Sequencer: Maya features a brand-new Sequencer with a redesigned high-DPI timeline and interface. Built for previs and layout artists, it allows for managing multiple shots and tracks with features like color coding, custom labels, automatic thumbnails, and smarter grouping.
  • Rigid Body Dynamics in Bifrost: A new workflow in Maya software enables artists to create destruction effects, such as collapsing bridges or shattering walls, with ease. The system supports running debris simulations without requiring users to rebuild setups.
  • Smart Bevel: New to both 3ds Max and Maya, Smart Bevel is purpose-built for post-Boolean intersections. It creates cleaner, more detailed bevels and remains fully non-destructive, allowing refinement through construction history even across complex curved edge sets.
  • OpenUSD Workflows: Maya includes Component Creator and Variant Manager to help build production-ready USD assets. These tools aim to reduce technical overhead when moving assets across tools and teams.

Autodesk emphasizes that these tools are designed to support existing workflows rather than replace them. The goal is to allow artists to focus on creative decisions while automation handles repetitive or technically demanding tasks.

The teams behind these releases scheduled live webinars to provide deeper dives into the new features. Sessions were planned for April 15 and 16 at 10:00 am PT and 1:00 pm ET. These events offered opportunities for users to register and ask questions directly to the product teams regarding the updates to Maya and 3ds Max.

By combining generative AI with modernized interface tools, Autodesk aims to shorten the path to final results for media and entertainment professionals. The updates reflect a broader industry shift toward integrating AI assistance in ways that preserve editorial control and maintain compatibility with established production pipelines.
