MIT Researchers Unveil Boltz-2 AI Model for Rapid Drug Revelation

Cambridge, Mass. — A new artificial intelligence model promises to accelerate drug discovery. Researchers from MIT and Recursion announced the release of Boltz-2, an updated AI system capable of predicting protein structures and, crucially, binding affinity—the strength with which potential drugs attach to target proteins.
The breakthrough, achieved in just 20 seconds using a single GPU, builds upon the foundation of boltz-1. Boltz-2 was developed at MIT’s Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL) under the direction of Regina Barzilay,in collaboration with Recursion scientists. The model is available for both commercial and non-commercial use under an MIT license.
Boltz-1, the predecessor to this AI model, quickly became an industry standard for co-folding models after its release last fall. Saro Passaro, an AI researcher, noted Boltz-2’s enhanced capabilities, stating it “doubling the performance of previous methods” in the realm of biotechnology and pharma-biotech.
