AI-assisted Mammography Reduces Interval Cancer Rates

A recent study indicates that utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) too assist in the review of mammograms can lead to a reduction in interval cancers – cancers detected between scheduled screenings. interval cancers are often more aggressive and present greater treatment challenges than those found during routine mammography, making their reduction a key indicator of screening effectiveness.

The research involved over 100,000 women who were randomly assigned to have their mammograms reviewed either with AI support or by the standard method of two specialist radiologists independently examining each image. Results demonstrated a 12 percent decrease in interval cancer rates among the group whose mammograms were AI-assisted. The rate fell from 1.76 cases per 1,000 women to 1.55 cases per 1,000 women.

Previous studies have suggested that AI can improve cancer detection rates. However, a critical question remained regarding its impact on interval cancers. This new study provides evidence that AI assistance may not only increase detection but also contribute to a more effective screening process by reducing the occurrence of these more challenging cancers.

As of January 30, 2026, this study represents the latest publicly available data on the impact of AI in mammography screening. Further research is ongoing to fully understand the long-term benefits and optimal implementation of AI-assisted mammography.
