The competition for elite artificial intelligence talent has reached unprecedented levels, with leading AI startups and established technology giants offering record-breaking compensation packages to secure machine learning experts.
Data from H-1B visa filings and industry reports indicate that base salaries for top engineers at firms such as OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity are now reaching levels previously reserved for the largest technology corporations.
Record Base Salaries and Compensation
According to a Business Insider report based on Department of Labor filings, Anthropic has filed for salaries as high as $690,000 for senior technical hires, setting a new benchmark for the sector.
OpenAI’s highest base pay for technical staff is now set at $530,000, with the majority of senior roles commanding more than $400,000.
Other well-funded startups, including Perplexity and Cohere, are offering base salaries ranging from $250,000 to $450,000. When combined with bonus structures and equity, total annual compensation for these roles often reaches or exceeds $1 million.
Even smaller companies with valuations under $2 billion are aggressively increasing their offers to compete for a limited pool of top-tier researchers.
The Talent War Between Startups and Big Tech
The escalation in pay is driven by a severe imbalance between the supply of elite AI engineers and the demand from companies racing to develop new models and agentic platforms.
AI startups are facing intense competition from “Big Tech” firms, including Meta, Google, and Microsoft, which are utilizing their vast resources to recruit talent with lavish packages.
Reports indicate that the competition has extended to extreme signing bonuses. Sam Altman has stated that Meta is offering signing bonuses of approximately $100 million to attract certain talent.
OpenAI has also utilized aggressive compensation strategies to maintain its lead, doling out massive stock compensation packages to its top researchers and engineers.
Financial Implications and Strategic Moves
The cost of developing artificial intelligence models is estimated in the billions of dollars, making the acquisition of talent a critical component of the “AI arms race.”
This financial pressure has led to significant capital movements among major investors. SoftBank recently sold a $5.8 billion stake in Nvidia to fund deals related to OpenAI.
- Anthropic: Base salaries up to $690,000.
- OpenAI: Base salaries up to $530,000.
- Perplexity and Cohere: Base salaries between $250,000 and $450,000.
- Meta: Alleged signing bonuses of approximately $100 million.
