Artificial intelligence is transforming robots from rigid tools into adaptive systems, driving automation into a new era. That’s the core message from a recent white paper by the International Federation of Robotics (IFR). Driven by labor shortages and cost pressures, industry is increasingly turning to machines capable of learning.

Physical AI: Learning in Simulation

A central concept is the rise of “Physical AI.” In this approach, robots acquire skills not through manual programming, but by training in highly detailed simulations. This pre-training in the virtual world significantly reduces setup times in real-world production.

The development of this “embodied intelligence” is attracting record investment globally. US corporations like Amazon and NVIDIA are pumping billions into the technology. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has even designated it a central “Future Industry” project. The global race for autonomous robots, capable of independently perceiving and acting, is well underway.

Top Trends for 2026: Autonomy and Collaboration

As early as January, the IFR outlined the top trends for the current year, with AI at the absolute center:

  • Analytical AI evaluates large datasets to identify patterns and predict failures.
  • Generative AI enables robots to learn new tasks and be controlled via voice command.
  • Human-robot collaboration is made safer through AI-powered vision systems, with robots avoiding obstacles in real-time.

Simultaneously, the industry is focusing on open, modular platforms rather than closed systems. This flexibility, however, has a downside: cybersecurity is emerging as a critical challenge.

Modern, open robotics platforms increase the attack surface for cybercriminals—ranging from manipulation of controls to the espionage of sensitive production data. Those seeking to protect their production practically and immediately can find concrete protective measures, information on new laws (including AI regulation), and practical steps for small and medium-sized enterprises in a free e-book, “Cyber Security Awareness Trends.”

Record Numbers Despite Slight Dip in Germany

The drive toward automation is reflected in impressive numbers. The global market for industrial robots reached a record 2024 value of $16.7 billion USD. Worldwide, 542,000 new units were installed – more than double the number from ten years ago.

Asia dominates the market with a 74 percent share. China alone installed 295,000 robots, a new national record. Europe holds 16 percent, and America 9 percent. However, some established markets experienced slight declines – including Germany, the USA, and Japan.

Strategic Shift: From Cost to Resilience

The AI revolution represents a strategic turning point. Companies are increasingly viewing robots not merely as a means of reducing labor costs, but as a way to achieve operational resilience, improve product quality, and shorten time-to-market.

The barrier to entry is falling: if robots can be programmed via speech or trained in simulation, automation becomes more attractive for medium-sized businesses. Automation is shifting from a one-time capital expenditure to a scalable capability that grows with the company.

Outlook: The Era of Intelligent Colleagues Begins

The IFR expects AI to permeate all robotics applications within five to ten years. “Physical AI” will remain a focus, promising robots that are quickly deployable and can adapt to new tasks with minimal human intervention.

Humanoid robots, which have received a lot of media attention, are not yet poised for widespread practical use in production due to high costs and technical hurdles. The immediate future belongs to the increasing intelligence of proven industrial and collaborative robots. The IFR’s message is clear: the age of learning, adaptable automation is here.

Recent developments, such as the collaboration between Microsoft and Hexagon Robotics to deploy Hexagon’s AEON industrial humanoid robot powered by Microsoft’s cloud and AI stack, highlight the growing seriousness of the transition. The focus is on making humanoid robots reliable enough for live industrial environments, initially in inspection, maintenance, and high-risk environments like factories, utilities infrastructure, and logistics centers. This isn’t necessarily about replacing humans, but providing practical support for teams facing labor shortages and safety constraints, with humans still supervising and handling exceptions.

The global humanoid robot market is now estimated at ~$38B within the next few years, according to Goldman Sachs, signaling a significant economic battlefield is forming around this technology.
