Bruce Schneier, a leading cybersecurity expert, warns of critical AI risks and government data security flaws in his recent testimony before a House committee. Schneier highlights dangers associated with the Department of government efficiency (DOGE) initiative, emphasizing that feeding sensitive government data into AI models creates vulnerabilities. These concerns are amplified by potential data exfiltration and weakened security controls, which Schneier suggests could lead to severe national security threats. The expert cautioned against the unmitigated use of artificial intelligence within the federal government, raising red flags about potential impacts on critical systems like the justice system and national defense. AI Poses Risks too Government Data Security, Expert Warns
Updated June 08, 2025
Cybersecurity expert Bruce Schneier addressed a House committee, cautioning against the unmitigated use of artificial intelligence (AI) within the federal government. Schneier’s testimony, delivered at a hearing titled “The Federal Government in the Age of Artificial Intelligence,” diverged from othre speakers who primarily emphasized the benefits of AI.
Schneier focused on the potential dangers stemming from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a White House initiative that has been scrutinizing government databases and implementing staff reductions. Representative Nancy Mace, R-S.C., highlighted AI’s potential to boost productivity amid DOGE’s workforce reductions.
Schneier, though, stressed the cybersecurity risks associated with DOGE’s data handling practices and its reliance on AI. He argued that DOGE’s actions coudl have serious national security implications, particularly concerning data exfiltration and weakened security controls.
The House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform held the hearing.
You all need to assume that adversaries have copies of all the data DOGE has exfiltrated and has established access into all the networks that DOGE has removed security controls from
Schneier warned that compromised data could be exploited to target military and political leaders. He criticized DOGE’s data handling, alleging that massive U.S. databases are being processed with AI and offered to private companies, causing “irreparable harm” to national security.
Schneier said, “Sacrificing cybersecurity in an effort to create an AI future not only risks the contry, it risks the AIs, which in turn risks our justice system, our legislative system, our banking system, national defence, and all of us, all of you personally.”
What’s next
The debate over AI’s role in government and the balance between efficiency and security is expected to continue as agencies explore further AI integration.
