Taiwan Leverages AI, Google for Personalized Diabetes Care
Taiwan is collaborating with Google to revolutionize type 2 diabetes care through artificial intelligence. The initiative, spearheaded by Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Governance (NHIA), aims to provide personalized treatment plans for 1.3 million Taiwanese individuals living with type 2 diabetes, with plans to reach over two million by 2026.
With approximately one in ten Taiwanese people affected by type 2 diabetes, the condition places a meaningful burden on the nation’s healthcare budget. The AI-driven approach seeks to address this by analyzing two decades of NHIA data to tailor care to individual needs.
The first initiative,AI-on-DM (Artificial Intelligence for Diabetes Mellitus),categorizes individuals based on the severity of their condition. This categorization is integrated into the government’s Universal Family physician Program 2.0, facilitating customized planning and care based on individual risk assessments. A second initiative uses a Gemini-based AI agent within the Taiwan My Health Bank app to provide personalized guidance using trusted diabetes content.
Dr. Shih Chung-liang, NHIA Director General, said, “AI has the power to transform healthcare in Taiwan by making it more personalised to individual needs. we beleive we are the first country to integrate AI into government-supported preventative healthcare initiatives at a national scale.”
