Rob Kearney Named Director of Athletics at American International College
SPRINGFIELD — American International College (AIC) has appointed Rob Kearney as its new director of Athletics. Kearney, who brings over a decade of athletic training and leadership experience to the role, will officially begin his duties on July 7. He will oversee AIC’s NCAA Division II athletic programs.
AIC President Nicolle Cestero lauded Kearney’s impact and innovative approach. She said his administrative outlook, strong coach relationships, and rapport with student-athletes would provide stability and direction for AIC Athletics.
Kearney previously served as assistant athletic director for sports medicine and performance. during that time, he restructured the department and rebuilt the college’s athletic training and strength and conditioning programs.
“I am humbled and honored to be selected as the director of Athletics here at AIC,” Kearney said. “I am eager to begin this journey and lead AIC Athletics with passion, excitement, and a vision of success.”
Before joining AIC,Kearney was an athletic trainer at Springfield Central High School and head athletic trainer for UMass Amherst’s men’s club ice hockey from 2014 to 2024. He also held positions at Williston Northampton School, Deerfield Academy, and Palmer Public Schools. Kearney and his husband, Joey, own CrossFit Iron Legacy in East Longmeadow.
Kearney’s background includes a 15-year professional strongman career. In 2023, he placed third in America’s strongest Man. He boasts a 961-pound deadlift record. Kearney has competed in the World’s Strongest Man five times and the Arnold Strongman Classic three times. In 2020, he was named Pound for Pound Strongest Man in the World by Official Strongman.
Kearney serves on the OUT Foundation’s executive board and formerly represented Massachusetts on the National Athletic Trainers’ Assoc. LGBTQ+ advisory committee. He holds degrees from springfield College and is a licensed athletic trainer.
