Wood recounted that some viewers believed the frequent shots of monkeys in the trees hinted at a simian assassin. “People thought that a monkey got ahold of the gun and did the shootout,” Wood said, noting fans cited the monkey shots as evidence of creator Mike White‘s supposed genius.
While Wood found the theory amusing, she admitted that she briefly considered its plausibility, given the numerous monkey shots and the gun’s circulation throughout the season. Ultimately, she favored the theory of multiple shooters, which she felt better explained the gunfire.
According to Wood, Michelle Monaghan quickly dismissed the monkey theory. “Michelle Monaghan just couldn’t be bothered with that rumor,” Wood explained. “So she was like, ‘That is absolutely not what happened.'”
the weirdest one for us was that people thought that a monkey got ahold of the gun and did the shootout.Because they were like, ‘Well, why would they keep cutting to the monkeys in the trees?’ People were really [like]’Oh, of course. [Creator] Mike [White]’s a genius.’ Honestly!
I think Michelle Monaghan just couldn’t be bothered with that rumor. So she was like, ‘That is absolutely not what happened. That’s just not [it].’
Despite Monaghan’s denial, Wood believes dismissing the fan theory didn’t spoil the show, as the actual twists remained unpredictable. She also noted the irony of a service monkey wielding a gun appearing in the series finale of The Righteous Gemstones, which aired after The White Lotus.
