Air Canada Jet Collides with Fire Truck at LaGuardia, Killing Pilots

Two pilots were killed late Sunday, March 23, 2026, when an Air Canada jet collided with a Port Authority aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicle on a runway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport. The incident, involving Flight AC8646 originating from Montreal, resulted in 41 injuries, with nine people remaining hospitalized as of early Monday morning, according to officials.

The crash occurred around 11:40 p.m. As the Air Canada Express CRJ-900, operated by Jazz Aviation, was landing. Kathryn Garcia, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, stated that the fire truck was responding to a separate, unrelated incident involving a reported “odor” on a United Airlines flight when the collision occurred. The aircraft struck the rescue vehicle, which was in the process of crossing the runway with permission granted by air traffic control.

Audio recordings of air traffic control communications reveal a frantic sequence of events. A controller granted permission for the fire truck to cross the runway, then immediately attempted to halt its progress, repeatedly shouting “Stop, Truck 1. Stop.” The controller subsequently issued a “go-around” order to an incoming Delta flight, diverting it from landing on the same runway. Following the collision, the controller could be heard expressing distress, stating, “I messed up.”

The impact caused significant damage to the Air Canada jet, with the cockpit destroyed and debris scattered across the runway. Photos show emergency exits deployed and stairways extended to facilitate passenger evacuation. Passengers described a chaotic scene following the impact. Jack Cabot, a passenger on Flight 8646, recounted a “hard” landing immediately followed by a collision and “chaos” inside the cabin.

The incident raises immediate questions about runway safety protocols and communication between air traffic control and emergency response teams. While both the aircraft and the fire truck had received clearance to be in their respective locations, the timing of their movements proved catastrophic. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is leading the investigation, which will likely focus on the sequence of events, communication procedures, and potential contributing factors.

LaGuardia Airport was closed following the crash and is not expected to reopen until at least 2 p.m. On Monday, March 24, 2026. Authorities are urging travelers to avoid the area as the investigation continues. The closure is expected to cause significant disruptions to air travel in the New York metropolitan area.

This incident underscores the inherent risks associated with airport operations and the critical importance of maintaining robust safety measures. The NTSB investigation will be closely watched by the aviation industry, as its findings could lead to changes in procedures and protocols aimed at preventing similar tragedies in the future. The focus will be on understanding how a situation with seemingly authorized movements resulted in such a devastating outcome, and what steps can be taken to mitigate the risk of similar collisions.
