Air France Flight Times: Why They’re Longer Than Competitors
Air France Flights to Bangui Substantially Lengthened Due to Airspace Restrictions

Longer Routes and Increased Flight Times
Flights from Paris to Bangui, Central African Republic, operated by Air France are currently taking between 8 hours and 20 minutes to 9 hours and 30 minutes to complete the approximately 5,100-kilometer journey. This is considerably longer than the roughly 6 hours and 20 minutes required for a nearly identical distance to Doha, qatar (approximately 5,000 km).
The extended flight time for Air France flight AF757 is due to a circuitous route. The path now curves over Spain, morocco, and Mauritania before heading east through Guinea, then crossing over the Ivory Coast, Ghana, and Nigeria before reaching its final destination.
Political Disputes Ground Air france in Key Airspaces
Air France is currently prohibited from flying over Algeria,Mali, and Niger. Restrictions over Algeria and mali have been in place since April 8th, stemming from a diplomatic crisis where aircraft crossing one country’s airspace are barred from the other.
Further complicating matters, French airlines – including those chartered by French companies – are no longer permitted to use Niger’s airspace as of September 2023. This followed a military coup in July 2023 that ousted the democratically elected government and installed a junta increasingly antagonistic towards France, its former colonial power.
Disadvantage for Air France
These airspace closures disproportionately impact Air France. The airline faces both longer flight times for passengers and increased fuel consumption due to the necessary detours, placing it at a competitive disadvantage.
Choice Routes for Competitors
While Air France is directly affected by these restrictions, other airlines are able to utilize alternative routes. Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa, and TAP Portugal can continue to fly over Niger and Algeria. Airlines like Qatar Airways and Emirates also have access to airspace over Chad, which remains open to them.
