Air India Plane Crash in ahmedabad: Recovery Efforts Underway

Search teams in Ahmedabad have located a black box from the wreckage of the Air India flight that crashed
Thursday. The Air India crash claimed the lives of 241 passengers, along with an
estimated 24 people on the ground. Authorities continue to identify victims as grieving families provide DNA
samples.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, en route to London, crashed shortly after takeoff into a residential area,
including a hospital staff hostel. Kanan Desai,the city’s deputy police commissioner,confirmed the body count
had reached 265.
Ashfaque Nanabawa, 40, anxiously searched for his cousin Akeel Nanabawa, his cousin’s wife, and their
three-year-old daughter, all passengers on the flight. Nanabawa recounted their last phone call just before
takeoff: “He called us and he said: ‘I am in the plane and I have boarded safely and everything was OK’. That
was his last call,” nanabawa said.

Another woman, who chose to remain anonymous, shared that her son-in-law perished in the plane crash. “My daughter doesn’t know that he’s no more,” she said, overcome
with emotion. “I can’t break the news to her, can someone else do that please?”
Thakur Ravi, a kitchen worker at BJ Medical College hostel, was desperately seeking his mother, a cook, and
his two-year-old daughter. He had left his daughter in his mother’s care before delivering lunch to doctors
shortly before the Air India disaster. “All the other ladies who cook food at
the hostel managed to escape, but my mother and daughter got left inside. I have searched everywhere but have
not found them,” Ravi stated.
Of those on board, 169 were Indian, 53 were British, seven were Portuguese, and one was Canadian. Among the
British victims were Dr. Prateek Joshi, a radiologist, his wife Komi Vyas, also a doctor, and their three
children. NDTV reported that Vyas had recently resigned from her position in Udaipur to relocate the family to
the United Kingdom.

Akeel Nanabawa, a businessman from Gloucester, also died in the crash along with his wife, Hannaa vorajee, and
their four-year-old daughter, Sara. The family released a statement describing them as ”widely loved and deeply
respected… A ray of sunshine… A pillar of strength.”
Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British survivor, recounted the horror of the crash from his hospital bed. He told DD
News that the plane seemed “stuck” moments before impact. ”when the flight took off, within five to 10 seconds
it felt like it was stuck in the air… The aircraft wasn’t gaining altitude and was just gliding before it
suddenly slammed into a building and exploded,” Ramesh said.
Ramesh, who was seated near an emergency exit, miraculously survived. “I saw people dying in front of my eyes
– the air hostesses, and two people I saw near me,” he recalled.
“The scene of devastation is saddening. Our thoughts remain with those who lost their loved ones in this
unimaginable tragedy.”
The aircraft Accident investigation Bureau of India is leading the investigation, with assistance from teams
from the U.S. and the U.K.
Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg pledged the company’s support. ”Safety is foundational to our industry… Our
technical experts are prepared to assist investigators,” Ortberg stated.
Air India’s owner, Tata group, will provide 1 million rupees ($117,000) to the families of the deceased and
cover medical expenses for the injured.
