Air India Crash: Focus on Airline Safety
Air India CEO urges Safety focus After Deadly crash
Updated June 16, 2025
Air India Chairman N. Chandrasekaran addressed employees Monday, emphasizing that last week’s tragic plane crash, which claimed at least 271 lives, should serve as a catalyst for enhancing the airline’s safety protocols. He encouraged staff to remain resilient amid ongoing scrutiny.
During a town hall meeting at the Tata Group-owned airline’s headquarters near New Delhi, attended by 700 employees, Chandrasekaran described the crash as the “most heartbreaking” crisis of his career. The meeting addressed the airline’s role in ensuring future safety.
Chandrasekaran, 62, also chairman of the Tata Group, stated the importance of awaiting the investigation’s findings, acknowledging the complexity of modern aircraft and the need to understand why existing redundancies and certifications failed to prevent the accident. The airline’s role in the investigation is crucial.
The accident involved a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to Gatwick Airport from Ahmedabad. Shortly after takeoff, the aircraft lost altitude and crashed into buildings, resulting in a massive fire. All but one of the 242 passengers and crew members perished, along with approximately 30 individuals on the ground, marking it as one of the worst aviation disasters in recent years.
Both Air India and the Indian government are jointly investigating various aspects of the crash, including engine thrust, flap functionality, and the reason the landing gear remained open during takeoff and subsequent descent. The investigation aims to clarify the airline’s role and prevent future incidents.
The crash presents a significant challenge for Air India, which has been working to modernize its aging fleet, and for Boeing, which is striving to restore public confidence following previous safety and production concerns. The airline’s role in maintaining safety standards is under scrutiny.
Following the Tata Group’s acquisition of Air India from the government in 2022, investment plans were announced to transform the airline into a “world-class airline” after years of financial losses, frequent delays, and inadequate maintenance under government management. The airline’s role is to regain passenger trust.
Adding to the airline’s challenges, an Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner en route to New Delhi from Hong Kong returned to its origin shortly after takeoff Monday due to a technical issue.
“It’s not easy to face criticisms,” Chandrasekaran said.”We are going to get through this. We need to show resilience.”
What’s next
The investigation into the crash is expected to continue for several months, with findings potentially influencing future aviation safety regulations and airline operational procedures. Air India will need to demonstrate its commitment to safety to regain public trust and solidify its role as a reliable carrier.
