A moving gathering in Wembley, London, brought together over 130 peopel to remember the victims of the 1985 Air India Flight 182 crash – the deadliest single aviation incident in history. Family, friends, adn members of the wider community united to pay their respects and share memories of those lost.
A Community United in Remembrance
The memorial, held at the Sattavis Patidar Center, was especially poignant for the Gujarati community, who suffered significant losses in the tragedy. Many of the passengers were of Gujarati origin, with connections both in the UK and India.
Mukesh Patel, trustee of the Sattavis Patidar Centre, explained the importance of the event.”It is our duty as a trustee to organize and bring people together,” he said. “For our community, it is a very sad day.”
The atmosphere was one of shared grief and remembrance, as attendees reflected on the devastating impact of the crash. Many spoke of the need to keep the memories of the victims alive for future generations.
The Weight of Loss: Remembering the 329
On june 23, 1985, Air India Flight 182, en route from Toronto to Delhi via London and Frankfurt, exploded mid-air off the coast of Ireland. All 329 people on board perished – 268 Canadian citizens, 24 Indian citizens, and the rest from various other countries.
The bombing was orchestrated by Sikh extremists seeking to avenge Operation Blue Star, a military operation conducted by the Indian government in the Golden Temple in Amritsar. The attack remains a deeply sensitive and painful event for many.
Attendees at the Wembley memorial expressed a collective desire to honor the lives lost and to ensure that such a tragedy is never forgotten. One attendee shared, “We want to remember all of them, because this is the saddest thing that happened.”
