An ‌Air India passenger plane crashed in ahmedabad, India, on Thursday, ​killing⁢ all 242 people on board. The flight, bound for London’s Gatwick​ Airport, went down shortly after takeoff, according to officials. The Air ⁤India flight 171, a Boeing 787-8, crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar five minutes after taking ⁣off at‍ 1:38 p.m.local time, according to faiz Ahmed Kidwai, the director general of the directorate of civil aviation.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner went down ‍in ‌a populated area near the airport,⁣ sending black smoke ‍billowing into the sky. Firefighters worked to‍ extinguish the blaze engulfing the wreckage and nearby buildings.The​ plane crash also⁤ resulted in casualties on the ground, though exact figures are still being⁢ determined.

The airline reported‍ the flight manifest included 169 ​Indian citizens, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese nationals, and one Canadian. However, authorities are working​ to reconcile discrepancies in passenger numbers.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer called the news “devastating,” while Indian Prime minister Narendra Modi described the crash as “heartbreaking beyond words.”

“It appears there are no survivors in the plane crash,” Police Commissioner G.S. Malik told The Associated Press.

India’s Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu said that all efforts were underway to provide medical⁢ aid and relief support at the site. Air India has established an emergency center‌ and support team ​for families seeking information,⁢ according to Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran.
