An Air India passenger plane crashed in ahmedabad, India, on Thursday, killing all 242 people on board. The flight, bound for London’s Gatwick Airport, went down shortly after takeoff, according to officials. The Air India flight 171, a Boeing 787-8, crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar five minutes after taking off at 1:38 p.m.local time, according to faiz Ahmed Kidwai, the director general of the directorate of civil aviation.
The Boeing 787 Dreamliner went down in a populated area near the airport, sending black smoke billowing into the sky. Firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze engulfing the wreckage and nearby buildings.The plane crash also resulted in casualties on the ground, though exact figures are still being determined.
