Updated june 13, 2025
Viswashkumar Ramesh, a British citizen of Indian descent, miraculously survived the Air India plane crash that claimed 241 lives shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, India, on Thursday. The Air India crash marks one of India’s
worst aviation disasters and the first crash involving a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner since its introduction in 2009.
Ramesh, who was en route to London, is currently receiving treatment at a local government hospital. He told
India’s national broadcaster that the aircraft appeared to stall moments after becoming airborne. According to
Ramesh, unusual lights flashed before the plane accelerated but failed to gain sufficient altitude, leading to the
plane crash.
Seated in 11A, Ramesh found himself on the side of the plane that impacted the ground floor of a building. He
managed to escape through a broken door, unfastening his seatbelt and pulling himself out of the wreckage.
Despite sustaining burn injuries to his left hand, he walked a distance in shock before locals assisted him and
transported him to the hospital.
”When I opened my eyes, I realized I was alive,” Ramesh said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site on Friday and spoke with Ramesh.
“I told Modi what all I had witnessed. He also enquired about my health,” Ramesh said from his hospital bed.
Dr. Dhaval Gameti, Ramesh’s physician, reported that the survivor was disoriented and suffered multiple injuries
but is now out of danger. Ramesh, who still had his boarding pass, witnessed the deaths of numerous passengers
and crew members amidst the debris.
After the aviation disaster, Ramesh contacted his relatives in Leicester, England, his cousin Ajay Valgi told the BBC. He is married with a young son.
”He only said that he’s fine, nothing else,” Valgi said, adding that the family is “happy that he’s OK, but
we’re still upset about the other brother.”
Ramesh’s brother, nayan Kumar Ramesh, told Sky News that his brother called their father promptly after the
crash to report his survival.
“He video called my dad as he crashed and said, ‘Oh the plane’s crashed.I don’t know where my brother is. I
don’t see any other passengers. I don’t know how I’m alive, how I exited the plane’,” he told Sky.
What’s next
Investigations are underway to determine the cause of the Air India crash, while Ramesh continues his recovery in
the hospital. The focus remains on supporting the families of the victims and understanding the factors that led
to this tragic event.
