air India Plane Crash: Survivor Recounts Harrowing Escape

Viswashkumar Ramesh, the lone survivor of ThursdayS Air India plane crash in India, described his miraculous escape from the wreckage. The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, en route to London, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, killing 241 people. Ramesh, a British national, was seated in 11A when the aircraft struck a medical collage hostel.
Speaking from his hospital bed, the 40-year-old Ramesh told DD News that he initially believed he would die. He recounted regaining consciousness after the impact, unbuckling himself, and escaping through a broken emergency exit.He witnessed the deaths of other passengers, including an air hostess, during his escape.
Ramesh was traveling with his brother, Ajay, who was seated in a different row. According to Ramesh, the side of the plane he was on landed on the ground, creating an opening for escape. He noted that the building wall blocked the exits on the opposite side of the aircraft.
Hiren Kantilal, Ramesh’s cousin, said that Ramesh contacted his family in Leicester, England, after the crash. Despite being covered in blood, Ramesh reassured his family of his safety and urged them to locate his brother, Ajay Kumar.
Kantilal added that Ramesh spent 10 to 15 minutes searching for his brother before rescue services transported him to the hospital. The family is relieved that Viswashkumar survived but heartbroken about Ajay’s fate.
“But when I opened my eyes, I realised I was alive and I tried to unbuckle myself from the seat and escape from where I could. It was in front of my eyes that the air hostess and others [died],” Ramesh said.
According to Ramesh, the plane seemed to stall midair briefly after takeoff before crashing into the hostel. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the crash site and met with Ramesh at the hospital. Rescue workers continue searching the site for missing persons and aircraft parts following the devastating Air India plane crash, the worst aviation disaster in a decade. The plane crash survivor is now recovering, while the rescue operation continues.
