Air India Crash: Survivor Describes Horror, Grapples With Loss
Vishwash Ramesh, the lone survivor of the Air India Flight 171 disaster, recounted the terrifying moments leading up to the crash.The flight, en route to Gatwick Airport, went down shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, India, killing 279 people.among the deceased was Ramesh’s brother, Ajay.
Ramesh recalled noticing a problem almost immediately after the Boeing 787 Dreamliner left the ground at 1:39 p.m. local time (8:09 a.m. GMT). He said he felt somthing was “stuck,” and the lights began to flicker. Just seconds later, the pilot, Capt. Sumeet sabharwal, 55, issued a mayday call.
the plane, according to Ramesh, failed to gain altitude.”everything happened in seconds. I realized we were going down. the aircraft wasn’t gaining altitude and was just gliding,” Ramesh said. ”After that, the plane seemed to speed up, before it suddenly slammed into a building and exploded. Everything was visible in front of my eyes when the crash happened.”
Ramesh,who was seated in 11A,believes his location near a broken door allowed him to escape. He managed to climb out as flames engulfed the aircraft and a nearby hostel. Now recovering in his family’s village of Diu, on India’s east coast, he struggles with the loss of his brother, who was seated across the aisle in 11J. The brothers jointly ran a fishing business inherited from their father.
“But I lost my brother in front of my eyes. So now I am constantly thinking ‘Why can’t I save my brother?” Ramesh said.
