Air India Crash: Survivor’s Escape Story
Air India crash: Survivor Details Miracle Escape, Role of Fate
Updated june 18, 2025
Vishwash Ramesh, 40, the lone survivor of a recent Air India plane crash, has spoken publicly about his ordeal, calling his survival a “miracle.” He recounted crawling through a gap in the wrecked fuselage of the Dreamliner to escape.
Ramesh, who was seated apart from his brother Ajay, unbuckled his seatbelt amidst the chaos and escaped through an opening in the wreckage. “I still don’t understand how I escaped,” Ramesh saeid. He was spotted by locals and rescuers near the crash site at a medical college. He initially attempted to return to the burning plane to find his brother, but paramedics intervened.
After being discharged from the hospital Tuesday, Ramesh returned to his family home. His parents,Bava and Manibhai, along with his wife, child, and younger brother Nayan, who flew in from Leicester, are providing support.
Ramesh recalled the moments leading up to the crash. “It felt like something got stuck and the lights started flickering,” he said. “Everything happened in seconds. I realized we were going down.” The pilot, capt. Sumeet Sabharwal, 55, radioed air traffic control, shouting, “No thrust… May Day…may Day.”
“The aircraft wasn’t gaining altitude and was just gliding,” Ramesh continued. “After that, the plane seemed to speed up, before it suddenly slammed into a building and exploded. Everything was visible in front of my eyes when the crash happened.”
Ramesh now grapples with survivor’s guilt. He had attempted to secure adjacent seats in Row 11,near the emergency exits, but was unsuccessful. Ramesh was in Seat 11A,while Ajay was across the aisle in 11J. Ajay died with 240 other passengers and crew members.
“If we had been sat together we both might have survived,” Ramesh said.
”It’s a miracle I survived. I am okay physically but I feel terrible that I could not save Ajay.”
What’s next
An investigation into the crash is underway. Authorities are examining the aircraft’s black box to determine the cause of the engine failure and subsequent crash. The role of pilot error and mechanical failure are being investigated.
