Air India Reduces‍ International Flights After Ahmedabad Crash

Updated June 18, 2025

Air India, teh Tata Group-owned ⁢airline, announced Wednesday it will reduce international services operated by widebody aircraft by 15% for several weeks. This‌ decision follows the‌ June‍ 12 crash of flight ‍AI171, bound⁢ for London, shortly after ⁣takeoff ⁢from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport⁤ in ⁢Ahmedabad. The ‌airline aims to improve efficiency, minimize passenger inconvenience, and ensure operational stability.

The international flight⁢ reductions will be in‌ effect through ⁤June 20⁤ and continue until‌ at least mid-July. Air India ‍stated ‌this move increases the availability ⁣of⁤ reserve aircraft ⁤to manage any unforeseen disruptions.‍ The airline ⁣is offering passengers affected ⁣by these changes the option to reschedule their travel ⁢without cost⁣ or receive a full refund.

Following the Ahmedabad ‍plane crash, Air⁤ India ⁤is taking enhanced ⁤measures to ensure passenger ‌safety. ⁣The Directorate General⁤ of Civil Aviation (DGCA) mandated enhanced safety inspections, and Air India reports that 26 of its 33 aircraft have been cleared for service after completing these inspections. The remaining aircraft are expected to be inspected⁢ in the coming days.

“The fact that 26 ⁣aircraft have been cleared gives reassurance in the safety measures and procedures that we follow,” Air India said.

As an⁣ added precaution,Air India will also conduct enhanced safety checks on its Boeing 777 fleet. The airline is cooperating with investigating authorities, including ‍the⁣ Aircraft Accident Inquiry Bureau ⁤(AAIB),DGCA,and⁤ the Ministry of Civil Aviation (MoCA),to determine the cause ⁤of the‍ accident.

Air India also addressed the tragic loss of 241⁣ passengers and crew‌ members aboard flight AI171. ⁣The airline expressed its condolences and solidarity with the families and ‌communities⁢ affected by the accident. Air India is coordinating with the ⁢Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Gujarat state⁣ government to support the families of the deceased⁤ and injured.

Along‍ with the aftermath of the crash, Air‌ India cited recent⁢ disruptions to its international operations, including 83 ⁤cancellations, due to geopolitical ⁤tensions in the Middle East, night‍ curfews in European and East ⁤Asian‌ airspaces, and the ongoing safety inspections.

What’s next

Air India plans to share the revised schedule for its international services, effective June 20, shortly. The airline is working to reestablish passenger confidence and operational stability following the tragic incident and external events.
