Air India Increases Charges for Second Checked Bag on Europe and UK Flights

Air India Increases Charges for Second Checked Bag on Europe and UK Flights

Air India Increases Check-in Baggage Fees for Europe and UK Flights

Air India (AI) has updated its baggage policy for flights to and from Europe and the UK as of October 17. Passengers will now pay more to check in a second bag. The lowest economy fare will allow only one checked bag weighing up to 23 kg. If travelers wish to check in two bags, they must select a higher economy fare, starting from approximately Rs 4,000 for a one-way ticket.

Many major Western airlines, such as Lufthansa, also follow a similar policy. Economy passengers are generally allowed one checked bag, while an extra charge applies for a second bag. For instance, British Airways has a basic fare that permits only a handbag and offers higher tiers for more baggage.

Earlier this year, Air India made similar changes to its domestic flight baggage allowance. The base economy fare was reduced to a 15 kg limit from 25 kg, aligning with the policies of other Indian carriers. Historically, before 2022, Air India offered more generous baggage allowances to attract passengers.

The recent changes reflect Air India’s aim to align with international standards as it undergoes improvements with significant investment from the Tata Group. While travelers understand the need for these adjustments, some express concerns that the changes should have come after improvements in cabin quality and punctuality.

Currently, Air India still permits two checked bags of up to 23 kg each on North American routes. It remains to be seen how long this will continue.

An AI spokesperson explained the restructuring of fare families was to better reflect market trends. The new ‘value’ fare allows one checked bag with limited flexibility, while ‘classic’ and ‘flex’ fares provide two pieces of checked baggage. The new pricing structure aims to differentiate costs based on baggage needs.

A Delhi-based chartered accountant noted a significant price difference of about Rs 8,000 between fares that include either one or two checked bags. A competing Gulf airline offers a cheaper option at Rs 20,000 less and allows up to 35 kg but involves a longer travel time.

As Air India improves its services and IndiGo expands its routes, foreign airlines may need to adjust their pricing strategies to retain passengers who prefer the direct convenience offered by these Indian carriers.
