Air India: More Than Business – Chandrasekaran’s View
Tata Group Views Air India Acquisition as a Obligation, Not Just a Business Opportunity
Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran stated on Saturday, November 25, 2023, that the acquisition of Air India is a “responsibility” for the Tata Group, extending beyond a simple business venture. The Tata Group acquired Air India and Air India Express in January 2022 after decades of government ownership.
Challenges in the Aviation Sector
Chandrasekaran acknowledged the continuous challenges facing the aviation sector, specifically citing unpredictable global supply chain issues impacting the availability of parts, infrastructure, and new aircraft. He noted that these disruptions complicate planning, making even well-laid plans arduous to execute.
He further emphasized that the aviation industry is highly capital intensive with relatively thin profit margins.
Air India’s Change and Growth potential
Speaking at an event commemorating the 121st birth anniversary of J.R.D. Tata, Chandrasekaran reiterated the significance of Air India to the Tata Group. The group is currently implementing a five-year transformation plan for the airline, though progress has been slower than anticipated due to the aforementioned supply chain constraints and resulting delays in aircraft upgrades and deliveries.
Chandrasekaran highlighted the strong correlation between India’s economic growth and the aviation sector, stating that a 1% increase in GDP translates to a 2% growth in domestic aviation. He projected that if India achieves an 8% GDP growth, the aviation industry could experience a 16% expansion, a trend he anticipates continuing for at least the next three decades.
“so this is going to be a very exciting phase of economic growth, and for the aviation sector in particular,” Chandrasekaran concluded.
