Air New Zealand Flight to Auckland Cancelled After Fuel Fault adn Crew Illness
Auckland, New Zealand – A long-haul Air New Zealand flight from Hong Kong to Auckland was abruptly cancelled on Saturday night after a series of unfortunate events, leaving passengers stranded in Hong Kong.
Flight NZ80, scheduled to depart at 5:45 p.m., encountered a fuel fault while at the gate, according to a spokesperson for the airline.
Passenger Teresa housel, who was returning from a holiday in Taiwan with her husband, described a frustrating experience. “We were sitting outside the airport gate for a couple of hours,” she said. “The pilot kept us updated over the intercom, saying there was a technical issue with the plane.”
After the initial delay, the plane finally pulled away from the gate, only to be grounded again on the tarmac for another two hours.
“The pilot then announced that half of the crew members were unwell and they couldn’t fly,” Housel explained.
Air New Zealand provided accommodation for the affected passengers, and Housel was able to secure a flight back to Auckland on Sunday evening.
Despite the inconvenience, Housel praised the airline’s handling of the situation. “It was just kind of a very odd coincidence of things,” she said. “In some ways we feel peace about the fact it was cancelled as we wondered if it was like a sign it shouldn’t have gone ahead.”
The airline confirmed the fuel fault was resolved, but the unwell crew members necessitated the flight’s cancellation. “Passengers have been re-accommodated on the next available services, and we thank them for their patience while we worked through this disruption,” the spokesperson said. “The crew members are recovering and will return to New Zealand as soon as practically possible.”
This incident follows another recent Air New Zealand flight disruption. On Sunday afternoon, a flight from Wellington to Sydney was diverted to Auckland due to an engine issue.
